Welcome to the 2019 Draft Review, as we are one night to puck drop on the 2019-20 season..Grab some hot coco and tea biscuit and enjoy!!
This year we will be doing RANK for both Entry & UFA and grade for just the Entry Draft. Don't forget to go down memory lane and check what we wrote last year
ENTRY
GRADE - 3-4yr window on picks potential and impact with the SFHL
BUF C+
A.Texier, E.Bemstrom, A.Georgiev
6th overall Texier can he be top 6 this season? or is he more Top 9 Fwd who can hit 25-30pts in his ELC jury is out. Another CBJ player I like this pick feel this guy could be 20 goal player in the next year or two. Georgiev played 33 games and could see more action this season, not sure if hes the future No.1 in ranger land.
CHI D
None
Hawks couldnt make the draft this year so we felt D grade was fine, and decide to stock up for next year, rumours have the draft being saturday night event to get more viewership and hopefully more GM's. This is interested strategy and will this impact the team over the next couple seasons, or does he have assets to make some moves in-season ?
DET B
Turcotte, Barre-Boulet, Appleton
Rack does a great job with entry with only 2 picks he got a player in Turcotte who is 60-70pt player. AHL rookie of the year Barre-Boulet could be top 6 in not the distant future or guy that hits 20-25 but worth the pick in the 5th round. Appleton should play regularly this season which will help the wings and see if they can get back to the top.
Wings wouldve got a higher rank if they had couple more picks
EDM B+
Newhook, Holmstrom, Kahkonen, Tracey, Thomson, Alexeyev
No first rounder, np ..we like the newhook pick 50 pt guy but will need some time at BC. We thought maybe alittle earlier but Holmstrom has a play making mentally can be 40-50 guy but this is more long term project. Kahkonen could be in the net by next year and has the makings of solid nhl starter. This is the pick we really really like getting Tracey hes a true pro that could be 15-15 guy in the short term and then hit 40 pt well still in ELC area. Thomson is a gift off-dmen which is never bad thing in the SFL, grabbing Alexeyev not sure if hes more of Top 6 dmen grabs 15-20 or can he get to the next level and be 30pt dmen ?
MTL B-
Byram, Cernak, Romanov, Suzuki, Soderstrom, Heinola,
Virgo and his staff went hard on dmen like they did back when draft the likes of (Subban/Shattenkirk). 3rd overall was Byram they feel is not just going to be a great NHLer but fantastic pt dmen for fantasy (could make the leap next season). Grabbing big man Cernak who can get some pims and +/- can help the back end this season. This will be interesting pick if Romanov comes over (one year left KHL) sooner and could grab top 5-6 to help Les Canadiens . Suzuki is a playmaker, has top 6 potential but this might be a wait and see. The staff then went two more dmen Soderstrom and Heinola both whom show the mobile and off-dmen you want in your lineup specially in those ELC years.
PITT C+
Zegras, Pelletier, McMichael,
The beats got a great player in Zegras who should be point producer in couple years aiming high for 65 when he hits his full potential. Some had this guy lower on the draft board but Pelletier but could see this guy aiming for top 9. McMichael is part of the London Knights factory see this guy as a good glue guy hitting 25-30 in his ELC not sure if he can expand after that.
PHI C+
Boldy, York, Brink, Scott
Bold first round pick grabbing Boldy but all seriousness this guy could be a player whom mur and dr.pepper think can be 50 pt guy. York is another one of those mobile dmen who is B level prospect with some upside as 30-35pt guy when he makes it to the show after college. Brink another flyer another college kid who is a passer and looks to be top 9. Ian Scott is long term prospect but has the showings of being NHLer feel he's got more upside then other goaltenders and could show some jazz in the years to come.
SEA A
Comtois, Podkolzin, Cozens, Broberg, Pospisil, Hoglander,
3 picks in the first round and HOW MANY NEXT YEAR ? WOW..and drafts out in the mountains. Comtois plays this season hits 40pts then next year closer to 50 solid player. The russian kid Podkoizin has couple years left via contract in KHL but once hes free hes going to be a player, look for him to be 40 pt guy before his ELC is up. Cozens big and skilled prob next year could be full time NHLer not sure if hes in the mold of Vinny LeCavilour aiming 20 first couple years then hits the mark being 50-6o pt guy. Broberg is a dmen who might be just that all around good dmen in the SFHL. Pospisil and Hoglander are seen as long term options that you would think one gets to the show and be that 40 pt player. Kyle year in and year out provides some good picks and makes entry even tougher finding gems later rounds.
STL A
Kakko, Hirose, Chmelevski, Knight, Harley, Tarasov, Dorofeyev
Hendu grabs Kakko and gets A, but making some solid nhl/fantasy picks keeps that A. Hirose could provide off this season in the range of 35pts and then maybe explodes in year two? Chmelevski is a goal scorer who...Knights watch would love a guy like Spencer 6-4 with poise and this bluechipper is a future No.1 !! Harley could add the off from the back end aiming 20-30 and Tarasov was solid pick late he's 20 and could be battling for NHL job 2 years. Dorofeyev looks fun and if he comes over to N.A then yes yes this is a great pick this guys is high risk and high reward player.
SJS B
Dach, Kaliyev, Krebs, Mattheos, Foote,
The man that has a plan? Or another "fake" GM that is run by Mr.Grasser? All joking put aside Ken grabs some decent talent in the forms of Dach and Krebs who could be 40-50 pt players, not sure about Kaliyev many had him 4th rounder, but if he can get his skating little better could help...Mattheos and Foote are depth picks who your banking on one being NHLer and one that can give you 20-30 pt range when he does make the SFHL show.
TOR C+
Boqvist, Joseph, Grundstrom, Poulin, Beecher,
Thats weird no goalies for kooch and the leafs this draft. Boqvist is your leaf nhler draft pick who should play this season and grab 20-30 pts, We really like Jospeh who can put up some points and add some SHP... Grundstrom not sure if hes more of all around dmen 20 or if he can grab 30 if he makes the NHL. Poulin and Beecher are those "first nhl rounders" you roll the dice and hope to maybe one grabs a spot and gets those stats & cats...
VAN C-
Woll, Robertson,
CamVan CanCam didnt pick till 37th and as past scout for the leafs went that way and grabbed to leafs...some think Woll is the future goalie some have Scott..Robertson is a ahler forsure but full time nhler ? time will tell but long term prospect forsure in both players. Woll plays in the show in 2-3 years this grade goes to C
VEG C
Seider, Hagel, Mahura, Montembeault, Leason,
Seider 12th overall in fantasy draft hmmm? big body nhler forsure, maybe when the stats/cats get updated for the 2020 season this guy could be even more valuable? Hagel looks like top 9 guy with some potential to crack top 6 which grabs ya 40-50 pts . Mahura looks to play sometime this season and could be a good #5-6 on the back end for the Vegas Knights. Montembeault is going too be a backup not sure if hes a future No.1 ? is he a starter hmmm time will tell grabbing 34th isnt terrible..Leason is a solid player and will be a pro forsure i think this is a good
WPG A++
Hughes, Caufield, Dube, Formenton, Joseph, Hill
Just call him the wheelin and dealing coach he made some splashes on the draft floor and it was fun watching him. three picks in the first round and wow thats how you move up and grab your player(s)..He got Hughes check one, he gets a great future goal scorer in Caufield and Dube will be a point producer...rounding out with Formenton at fwd, dmen Joseph and goaltender Hill solid depth in the prospect system.
This year we will be doing RANK for both Entry & UFA and grade for just the Entry Draft. Don't forget to go down memory lane and check what we wrote last year
