Hello GMs & fans of the SFHL. In this months article we look at the how the season went in 2017-18 for the 14 SFHL Franchises and what more is to come for next year.
1. Big Congrats to the Winners $$ and Picks
a) Louie DeBrusk Cup Season Champs Edmonton Oilers GRASS, b) Elite 8 Winner Playoffs Edmonton Oilers GRASSand c) Cam Neely Bassment Lottery Ball Winner SJS Ken from the mainland of B.C
2. Good showing from Detroit Rack (2) and Seattle Sea Lions Kyle (3), as well runner up for Elite 8 Rack
Your monies are in the mail and bravo
3. Fantasy Player of the Year went to P.Rinne of the Seattle Sea Lions, Top Fwd went E.Malkin of the now defunk Whalers. Best D-Men V.Hedman of your Detroit Rock City Red Wings. The Surprise SFHL Fantasy player of the year went to Wild Bill Karlsson 12th overall in skaters with score of 85.93 second would be Connor "how the" Hellebuyck was a free agent pickup by the Wings with 99.12 score (3rd overall for goaltenders).
4. There has been some chit chat about the winners round 5 entry picks, that if you win $ you shouldnt be also getting a entry pick. Some would like 5th rounders only given out to teams that win in the Cam Neely SeaBassment H2H Playoff for Lottery. There is some merit to this that "the rich get richer" but teams otherwise not playing for anything could end up with this pick in a trade for asset. Not sure a 5th rounder is going to really break the bank? League will see if it makes sense to change it for 19-20 season.
5. Lottery Teams SJS =5 balls, CHI 4 balls, PIT 3 balls, PHI 2 balls and BUF 1 Ball this is a 1 draw only to finalize the bottom 5 teams (this will be reflected in each of the 3 rounds of entry). Lottery will not be done till we ramp back up in the off-season mid-late August.
6. Commish Office is looking at other ideas (similar to the NHL) that they may do more then 1 draw to determine placement (entry)as well if it would only be for the first rounder after that it would be based off final standings in the roto league. This has also been ask to look at how they do the UFA draft draw (1 ball per / 1 draw) snake draft. That again Commish is looking at how to get the bottom teams better odds vs giving them the first/second/third picks of the UFA draft. I believe this will be a give and take sort of approach.
7. Look for some change (or big) in Winners purse for the Elite 8 Winner/Runner Up. This money would most likely come from the 2/3rd place of the Louie DeBrusk Cup. Nothing is set in stone but league will take a look at the numbers.
8. What too do with the Whalers Franchise? Commish JV has made it clear that he feels this league thrives at 14-15 teams. So the off-season game plan is to find a NEW GM for relocation of the Hartford Whalers. League sources are unsure if there would be a relocation penalty (something like they could only protect 10-11 players vs the 12). I feel this is more of what this team could be as well that league was very sour that HFD didnt dissolved with the Kings and Flames at last years off-season.
9. The league feels they got something going and will look at making the Elite 8 playoffs start in early Jan but last 10 days vs the 2 full weeks to keep gm engagement. They are looking at other options to keep things moving in the slow months of Jan,Feb and early March.
10. The commish will be looking for the leadership of the GM's to help sell the idea of using fantrax even more so when dealing with callups and other admin things. As presently callups is x2 per player with a post in the boards. They may look at doing per month or another limitation that can be done via fantrax so less admin work for the GM.
11. there wouldnt be any changes in the scoring category league office will watch how the NHL goes, but SFHL wants to keep the focus on "PTS" then your secondary stats as well would love to get that one true "fantasy stat" that would add something a little different.
12. The Biggest/Bestest Trade would it have to be the one that was done on trade deadline day?
BUF Carey Price
VAN 1st Entry 18 van, 1st Entry 18 det, 2nd UFA 18, Will Butcher, Joel Erickson Ek
WPG Braden Holtby, 5th UFA 18'
13. LIVE DRAFT Fall Draft, would guys be interested in meeting up every 2-3rd year to do a draft live outside of Port Elgin/Saugeen Shores? I know Jes, Ken B.C and Rack Ottawa (Depending on your golf scheduled)....thoughts? Mainly it would help the likes of kooch, VanCity Cam, Melcher, Beats...we will try to get a draft date picked and or start to look at the calendar in May/June
14. Hopefully this isn't the last 14th thought, that we can find a new GM to relocate the Whalers, that the league is strong and teams want to stay and keeping moving in the forward direction not looking back as we push to the arm-chair fantasy limits. Thanks for a wonderful season. I still truly enjoy this league specially summer time off-season scouting the big main event the Fall Draft is a highlight and good to see the gms live. Its okay if your not 100% invested in the league 24/7, I'm not maybe shows by my ranking as well losing 2nd place to grass last year. My hope is we can continue to enjoy fantasy hockey on a large scale but using fnatrax more for the admin/logistics roster movement.
Please comment/feedback on what you would like to see to add/keep that excitement for you an your franchise? I do like to remind those that play NFL Fantasy that the SFHL is a different beast there will be slow months as we a longer and play all the time vs once every sunday.
GOD SPEED SFHL
