2014 Draft Review
The fall draft took place at the Roach Palace with a decent turnout from owners and general managers of the SFHL.
Below each team was given a Grade for how they did at the entry draft, with 3-5yr potential window in play (grade was avg base for each prospect) Have filled the cupboards helps but making sure good % turn into good players is the key, not having depth and no skill. I also didnt included trades of picks etc...just who's name got called out and put on the board. PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS ETC always like to hear what the fans think

BRK- YOURTH B-
Ty completed his first draft, getting a late first rounder he picked off-minded E.Gelinas who can step in right away and play. He also has the potential to be No.4 down the road one that can get some pts and add to the pp. Loved the next picks in the second round Alex Tuch who is a B+ prospect pwr fwd type heading to BC. As well free swinging D Anthony DeAngelo excellent skater, could be pp threat and is a playmaker hmm perfect for the SFHL...both are long-term prospects, 4th rounder Conner Brown is small right winger you amounted 128 pts last season in the OHL...he looks to be a C+ prospect with potential to get into a Top 6 down the road..Closing remarks Ty made so shrewd moves on trade day but came out with one regular in Dmen Gelinas and getting Tuch and DeAngelo will help in the long-term.
CGY-BOTTS A-
from his hiding spot at BNPD, Jase made Bennett No,1 in 2014 this kid is a point machine in the likes of a light-Dougie Gilmour...with the 9th overall W.Nylander grapes may hate him but this kid got some jazz hands, needs to add size but he's still kid look 2yrs for him can be a good Top 6 role. I like the next pick great mixture of speed, size and talent in Brendan Perlini then grabbing 30th overall dmen with some off upside Mike Matheson...Latta to me is at best a checker and 5th round are Kase & Petersson who i think could be a steal 63rd overall in 2014...he gots the size but will need the time to become a solid 3-4 Dmen in the SFHL.
CHI-MELCHER C+
Mike Melcher went with high-end skill with his first pick 7th overall Sonny Milao ( think M.Riberio) heading to BC will take some time I feel no need to rush him..2nd round red (Russian) flag with N.Prokhorkin to me this is a 5th rounder - 3rounder player as he's KHL ...I know some say u dont worry in the SFHL as they would in NHL...got size and can put up pts but does he come over ? MM gets franchise goaltender in Demko (long-term) and reliable dmen Jake McCabe who some think has more off input then a year ago i see at best No.4 (20pts/3 level of secondary stats)..5th round another goalie I.Shestyorkin sometimes those guys dont come over to this side of the pond (goaltenders) but if he does could be a good sfhl starter. I just feel to much red-flags in this 2014 chicago picks...
DET-RACK C+
D-Rack got started with 3rd overall L.Draisaitl (all i can say oil better not screw his development) is the pwr fwd model but wouldnt get any pims he's more that 50-60 pt potential. Goalie goes in the 2nd K.Gudlevskis again feel this was early early pick for this net minder as many in the business have him C+ ranking..Damon Severson gives wings some off from the back end to early to tell if will be a high 30pt player or more in the teen range...right after they get C.Brown could be in line for the 3rd line in a few years.. Rack did well with Leon & Severson...but the others will remain suspect prospects until they get to the show...
EDM-GRASS C
they opened up the 2nd round with there first pick of the draft with Ivan Barbashev who is 2way style fwd.next 24th was D.Pastrnak winger has skill and vision in a Top 6 mould. ..Off from the back end was a theme and Oil got S.Gostisbehere smaller dmen but could put up the pts ..dont except much more then 15 for the next two years...5th rounders J.McCann 2way centre that has a nose for the net but is 3-4yrs away before even getting a job
HFD - GOAT A
Grasses second team went a different direction grabbing Sam Reinhart 2nd overall..does he have the total package to be a Franchise player? with the 5th overall getting cornerstone Dmen A.Ekblad some thought maybe a little early but there wasn't much in terms of elite style dmen on the draft list this season, as well this was already there 2nd pick with another on the way in the first round 8th overall went to J.Virtanen fans love this guy and soon the SFHL will see a true pwr style winger who will be a 50-50 guy when he reaches his potential. Three picks in the first round not to bad but that is all Goater and boys got a skilled fwd, good no.2-3 dmen and a pwr style fwd..the first two will see action this year but expect more from them in year 2-3...feels he hit a good triple and made his checklist easy.
LAK-TUNA C
King Dan, has a system and went right after a rookie player whom has got action under his belt. 24pts last year for 10th overall Nieto....I expect more of the same in year 2 and maybe a jump by year 4 to 35-40...but that might be the ceiling...the crown selected another nhl rookie Eric Haula again his ceiling seems to be 35-40pt in that tier 3 range...3rd up was B.McGinn who was a decent scorer in jr and ready for the pros in a year or two many have him beg as good 3rd liner ..next up was the 5th for Dan and gets a project in Brandon Halverson beanpole but loads of time to develop in this system behind the likes of Allen & Quick...this kid could be a good fine for Dan down down the road and just incase LAK grabbed another net minder V,Vaneck small but quick again like Brandon loads of time to get to the show.
MTL-VIRGO B-
Les Canadiens started with a bang and a little surprise getting M.Dal-Colle 13th overall the kid is big and has smooth hands...Habs grabbed N.Scherbak in the 2nd round this kid has the smarts and is gifted skater there is a long-term B+ prospect on this player, Habs need a winger with Horton done and older vets coming to end in the next couple of years. 51st overall went to a giant of man J.Tinodri who they hope can get into the lineup this season and add PIM this player is not much more then C level prospect No.6 dmen ..Virgo and Co went with two picks in the 5th to finish up with project Dmen T.Sanheim & big man J.Glover both D and not expect to been see for 4-5years
PHI -MUR C
Mur and the flyers went with K.Kapanen 4th overall we had him late first round...BUT he's fast and can handle the puck good right winger almost close to the pro's could be a Top 4 fwd or more likely top 6 ..We knew little about the next player in Chris Tierney but the guy can put up the pts...good leadership = good nhl pointer getter maybe not but could be a 3rd liner in due time maybe as soon as next season. Grandlund, Markus has poise wouldnt be like his bro-hym but can reliable 3rd liner someone that can get 30pts and add some secondary stats/cats...36th overall Fast is Fast not sure how much time he will get this season but could be in line for some minutes in 15-16 ceiling is top 9. Mur went with the trend of drafting goalies in the 5th round this year who some feel could become a decent starter down the road again a very long-term project-prospect..But again its keeper year and you need to think about the future as well the present.
PHX-DUSTER LITTLE C
Chad lives for the draft its one of his most seen in action of the season. Yotes got hand slap so where kicked out of the first round(lottery) to #16 but still grabbed a good prospect in N.Goldobin he is lethal and could be a good producer when he gets to the show...someone whom the yotes need on the right side.Chad then went back to his regular position (via from the draft lottery) in round 2 getting a prototypical yotes player in Larkin 2way fwd with some off upside 30+ pts..again went with a nhl checker in Quinville we dont think theres much off-potentail here he will be a good 9th forward while in his entry level deal..and getting last place pushes u to 68th last player grabbing goaltender J.Johansen who is at present time C level prospect
PIT-MARKO B A-
This guy is the popcorn guy of guys...love this pick K.Fiala he could be over next season....off threat top 9 to start but easy top 6 40 pt range in couple of nhl seasons. not bad 14th overall...Another good pick grabbing J.Vrana potent sniper and is quick quick..34th this was a good move by Pens and Mark waiting for maybe top tier group dmen Hayden Fleury quick & engaged and has size 2yrs, upside Top 4. Nic Kerdiles is a college kid but could become a man on the wing for these pens 3rd liner maybe could reach top 6 in time..this is a checklist pick Adam Lowry is a 4th liner in the SFHL who can be 20pts/50pims player good in the 4th round ...
SEA-KYLE A-
Another new GM add to the SFHL Family one that should have a good future.6th overall first pick ever not bad N.Ehlers is a fantasy player small but big-time producer he is A level prospect it may take few years before we see his name on the scoresheet. 12th overall little surprise but not really he has size and can score H.Samuelsson and should get a crack next season...he should be 30-40 before his ELC runs up and could be 50pim range as well...I was talking to a scout the other day and he likes this guy next Robbie Fabbri we had him 3rd round he was selected 15th overall small fwd put high end skill needs time to develop d game but again could be a top4-6 fwd 40pts range...next up was J.Honka again a player in the top 5 for this draft at D...hes small but so was Zubov, he's playing in the W which will help assets are skating and vision hmm pretty good for dmen that can create off B level prospect & lastly 65th overall Hunter Smith this guy is big and mean more of a longer term prospect the thing is can he score more then 10-15 if he can get 25 pt range and clock in 100 nice gem...Kyle did well first time around, he's got some talent now to make his roster complete night in and night out, it doesn't look like a short term turnover..forgot Adam Kempe who could add offence on the 3rd line.
STL -HENDU C+
Mr. Hendu looked good at the draft table not selecting till the 22nd pick with L.Vey who some feel is top 6, more intune as top 9 35pt player.Next pick red flags maybe cause of his behaviour but Ho-Sang can tangle he could put up 20 goals and 2 assist, heres a player that needs the time and if all goes well could be Tier 3 with upside.
Nick Schmaltz is tiny, but so was tiny tim and ppl still talk about him today,,,college bound expect 4-5yrs before we see him grabbing 20-30 pt range with some upside towards top 6. William Karlsson 4th round has a nose for the net and looks to be a player this season. nice picks in the 5th with dmen Masin and McKewon defence builds Debrusk winners dont yah know...
TOR - KOOCH B-
KOOCHER one to never miss the draft grabbing big man N.Ritchie pwr fwd anyone? um yah taken 11th overall adds size and see him next year.Lemuix is a shit/pest player but has some off skill kooch hopes for that 20pt / 100pim style player..but its aleast 2yrs away. Not many picks for the leafs
VAN-CAM C-
are fav expansion team vancity first pick 49th getting 3rd liner C.Paquette and getting two in the 5th most notable C.Bleackely 2way style forward...
Point is a small kid put can score in JR....we see him getting to that 3rd line 35pts mark.
WPG-COACH C+
The Champ took 22nd overall O.Maata this kid is a rookie and looks good for the present day 30pt mark and maybe a little higher and more stats cats in the future.
Another Dmen R.Sproul has a cannon from the point and could see some action this season but more likely in the top 6 in 15-16 ..the kid has pp potential look for 25pt mark when he gets going. only 2 picks but your the champ 1st overall in the sfhl so not bad not bad
