The Hartford Whalers and Vancouver Canucks have come to an agreement on a pretty big trade. Its pretty simple, this trade is future for present. The Whalers GM is not happy about the slow start to the season and wanted a big upgrade on right wing, and he morgaged a bit of the future to do it. Here is how the trade breaks down...
Hartford trades: R. Johansen 900,000 *prospect P. Berglund $2,250,000 (1way) 3rd Entry 2012 whalers Jack Hillen $650,000 (2way)
for
Vancouver trades: Marian Gaborik $7,500,000 (6 mil in cap relief) = $1,500,000 cap hit Zach Bogosian $2,500,000 (500k in cap relief) = $2,000,000 cap hit
Roster moves for both teams will be posted below.

R. Johansen (P) reports to the Knights. Replacing Gaborik (6 mil) and Bogo (.5, 1-way) on the Canucks roster are Berglund (2.25, 1-way) and Hillen (.65, 2-way).
Canucks new cap hit - 61.822

okay boys...teams need to also put there cap relief (15million) & cap expense (15million). On there team hockey ops boards.
HFD - gets a pure sniper in Gaborik who can be one in a few too hit 50. Thats if he stay heathly, at 1.5 million thats one hell of a nice cap hit and so early in the season this was a great move on the rightside. Zach took a big hit last yr in the stats column, but if he can get back too 25pt/50+ pims gm goater will like. VANCITY - gm cameron has a plan in year 2, have a avg to good team and keep bringing in some great A talent like adding Ryan Johansen. Here's a young Centremen that is rank in the top 10 in prospect circles. Big man Patrick Berglund looks to be a solid #2-3 centermen in the fantasy world. grabbing a third round entry the cancuks can add another piece, and this team has some good scouts so you must think this pick was something the team wanted. Jack Hillen takes over the departed Bogosian.

Well boys, in an attempt to shake Virgo's fence-sitting analyses, I wanted to break down some trades with the benefit of hindsight. I decided to start in the first month of the season, and picked what was probably the most significant deal in October. Now that I'm done, I realized how tough it is since Cam has made tons of deals since, that used pieces acquired in this one, but stick with me:
Hartford's Haul Bogosian was dealt to TOR for MacArthur and Omark. Omark is on the Whalers Farm, while MacArthur is on the big club.
HFD has 2F @ $3.125M total, with combined stat projections of: 122PTS, +19, 87PIM, 34PPP, 0SHP, 15GWG. This breaks down to an average player line of $1.56M Salary, 61PTS, +10, 44PIM, 17PPP, 0SHP, 8GWG, obviously a very efficient and effective use of 2 roster spots. Considering most players with stat lines like that will cost you anywhere from $3-6M, this allows HFD to continue to pay a guy like Ovechkin a pile of money.
Canucks Haul Johansen is on the Canucks Farm, and Hillen is a cheap body filling a seat on the Canucks bench. Berglund was included in a deal with Toronto, in which Vancouver sent Bergy, Varlamov and Kulemin for Callahan, Perron, a 1st UFA, and a 3rd Entry (TOR). That 3rd Entry (TOR) was then packaged with the 3rd Entry (HFD) the Canucks got in the deal being analyzed, and sent to Montreal for Zajac. The 1st UFA was also dealt, as part of a deal to bring in Jeff Carter.
So, the Canucks are tough to analyze on stats alone, but essentially, we call Hillen a wash, and Johansen will be looked at vs. Omark in a moment. In salary considerations, including the money VAN took on in the deal, the Canucks have a net loss in these deals (Carter excluded) of $9.3M.
That leaves the Canucks dealing underperforming Kulemin, and 1B goalie Varlamov along with Berglund to gain Callahan, Perron, Zajac and part of Carter.
Kulemin vs Perron: Perron Berglund vs Zajac: Even Varly vs Callahan: Tough... given importance of goalies in the SFHL, Varly
Prospect Analysis To break down Omark vs. Johansen, let's look at both of their rookie years first. Omark has slightly better stats, but did so at an age 4 years older than Johansen. Furthermore, according to Dobber, Johansen is the #2 ranked fantasy prospect, with Omark at #63. A Clear win for the Canucks with Johansen.
Overall Breakdown This was clearly a case of a Win-Now vs a Building Blocks deal. If you look at it as such, the Whalers got 2 very inexpensive and productive roster players, allowing them to own a superstar like Ovechkin or Stamkos.
The Canucks ended up with Perron, a young superstar in the making, and 2 solid if not overpaid fantasy players in Callahan and Zajac. Add to this, a piece used to help bring in potential point/game player Jeff Carter, and the 2nd ranked prospect in the league. The difference in salary, however, equals a lack of another big contract player on the roster today, although this deficit disappears in the off-season.
Because the Whalers have not found the success this year that this deal was meant to address, and the Canucks have added some significant pieces in Perron, Johansen and others, the winner of this deal has to be Vancouver.
Now, obviously this can change... the Whalers can still make a run at the top 3, or deal Gaborik for assets in the off-season. Perron might lose his head again, and Varlamov could be the next Pat Roy in Colorado. But, all thigs equal, and considering team goals, I have to give the nod tot he Canucks.
Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for November's breakdown when I find another free 3 hours.

Well done, well done. I can't wait till November's edition. You need to make this a column and give it it's own thread. It also needs a catchy name.
