Just like the "real" Toronto Maple Leafs, the SFHL Leafs have made a significant deal that potentially cripples any re-building plans the team thought they had heading into next season. The blockbuster goes down like this:
To the Kings:
C- Tomas Plekanec (5.000--1way)
RW- Milan Hejduk (3.000--1way)
1st round entry pick (Leafs-2011)
1st round UFA pick (Leafs-2011)
FOR
To the Maple Leafs:
C- Joe Thornton (7.200--1way)
LW- Alexander Frolov (3.000-1.500=1.500--1way)*
5th round entry pick (Kings-2011)
*Kings eating 1.500 mil of Frolov's salary
Roster Moves:
- Leafs insert Thornton and Frolov directly into the line up
- Kings insert Plekanec and Hejduk directly into the line up
Leafs Cap: $62.703
Kings Cap: to be listed later today
**AWAITING APPROVAL** (once Tuna posts his new Cap)
The Low-down of the deal....
The Leafs have been sputtering most of the year and had to make a change fast to hopefully shake things up a bit before the season is a complete loss. The acquisition of Thornton brings in consistent night in and night out point production across the board, as well as brings in the super-star talent Leafs GM Jan Kamenski has been looking for since the departure of Sidney Crosby and Pavel Datsyuk a couple years back. "We know we paid a significant price in acquiring Big Joe", Kamenski said this morning on the FAN590. "But you know, we've never been a team who has re-built through the draft and we hope Joe can keep putting up good numbers for a few more seasons." The Leafs also picked up Alexander Frolov as a "throw in player" that the Kings have been desperately trying to get rid of for a few weeks now. "Frolly will get better and snap out of his funk. We're hoping he can regain some of the form that has made him successful in the NHL." The Leafs will only be paying for half of Frolov's salary. The Leafs most blaring issues seem to be coming from within the crease as the Dan Ellis/Martin Brodeur experiment has not gotten off to a very good start to say the least. However, Kamenski remains optimistic that the return of Brodeur from the IR and acquisition of Thornton will send a positive shockwave through the line up. "We needed to do something with the guys we have right now. The return of Marty will only help this club and Joe is one of the best. I guess only time will tell." With the season going the way it has gone thus far for the Maple Laughs, I mean Maple Leafs, any change is good change... right??!!??
The Kings acquired versatile C- Tomas Plekanec and RW- Milan Hejduk. In Plekanec, the Kings receive an all-round hockey player with good ice presence and awareness (straight from the mouth of Pierre McGuire). Hejduk is putting up close to career numbers this season and this ageless wonder will add depth to the Kings line up from the right side. Hejduk is a UFA next season and is unsure if he will return for another season, but considering how well he is playing this season, most likely he will be back again next year.
