Minneapolis - In a move that has several GMs throughout the SFHL shaking their heads, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded Paul Stastny to the Minnesota North Stars today for the Stars' 4th round pick in the upcoming Free Agent Draft. When reached for comment, Stars GM Patrick Bales and assistant to the general manager Duane Keith Kessel were seen shotgunning PBR and celebrating with the kind of euphoria not seen in the Twin Cities since before the death of Kerby Puckett. "This is the most one-sided deal since Toskala for Theodore," said Bales, while Kessel could be heard shouting "E5! E5!" between gulps of beer in agreement.
The move is a curious one for the Pens, ridding itself of a proven, if oft-injured, scoring powerhouse. With Stastny's exit, $6.6 million in salary is available for GM Mark Beaton to use in securing some of big name free agents bound to be available in the UFA draft, such as Kurt Sauer or Darcy Tucker.
Stastny is expected to be a stud this year, with a young, fast squad around him, making the Stars a threat to any team that dares enter the Met Centre in beautiful downtown Bloomington.
Stars fans can expect a much more competitive team on the ice this year, as the countdown to the opening face-off is now in full swing. A spring of scouting and a summer of reflection is winding down to what promises to be an exciting draft day Sept. 13.
